An Indiana committee that oversees government spending will seek detailed explanations next week from public colleges and universities on why they have raised or proposed to raise tuition.

Republican state Sen. Luke Kenley of Noblesville, chairman of the State Budget Committee, said Wednesday that the panel wants the colleges to justify their tuition increases at a time when spending for most state agencies is being cut.

Kenley says a growing number of lawmakers are offended by what seems to be an unwillingness or inability for higher education institutions to cut and contain costs during a recession.

He says lawmakers worked hard to maintain overall spending for higher education in the new two-year state budget.
