Gary trash pickup resumes after 11-day halt

Trash collection in the city of Gary has resumed following an 11-day halt after the City Council approved a new monthly fee.

The council voted 5-4 Tuesday night to impose that fee that city had started collecting last fall to pay a private garbage company before a judge ruled that the council's approval was needed.

The council's decision reversed the outcome from two weeks ago when it voted 6-3 against the fee, after which trash collection stopped. By approving the monthly fee of $12 for most residents and $7 for senior citizens, the council effectively ratified the city's contract with Allied Waste.

City spokeswoman LaLosa Burns says Allied crews began trash collections on Wednesday and would be working extended hours to clear away the accumulated garbage.
