Clergy in East Chicago hope a gun buy-back program this week helps prevent violence on the Lake County city's streets.
The Rev. Darnell Johnson of the Twin City Ministerial Alliance says the program usually nets about 150 firearms.
Volunteers and officers with the East Chicago Police Department will collect guns Wednesday and Thursday at two East Chicago churches. People turning in guns will receive grocery store gift cards in exchange for the firearms.
The event is largely funded through a grant from the ArcelorMittal steel company.
