Indiana trooper hurt in crash during traffic stop

A pickup truck driven by a suspected drunken driver ran into an Indiana state trooper's cruiser as it was stopped on an Indianapolis street, injuring the officer.

State police say Trooper Christopher Townsend was treated and released at a hospital for bumps and bruises after the crash about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Townsend had stopped a suspected drunken driver on U.S. 31 near Interstate 465 on the south side of Indianapolis when the pickup truck hit the police cruiser, then went across the median and stopped in a ditch on the street's opposite side.

The pickup truck driver was arrested on preliminary charges of drunken driving with a prior conviction and driving while intoxicated causing injury.
