Religious leaders, conservative groups and some Indiana lawmakers are renewing calls for a constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions.
But Democratic House Speaker Patrick Bauer of South Bend says amending the state's constitution isn't necessary because Indiana law already prohibits same-sex marriage.
Republican Representative Eric Turner of Marion, and Democratic Representative Dave Cheatham of North Vernon held a press conference today urging Bauer and the House Rules Committee chairman to let the proposal move through the legislative process.
They say the amendment is needed because courts in other states have tried to strike down statutes on marriage.
The proposed amendment has died twice in the Democrat-controlled House.
