A 2-year-old boy is recovering in an Indianapolis hospital after his foot was run over by a lawnmower Saturday afternoon.
It happened around 12:45 p.m. in the 23,000 block of Acai Place in St. Joseph County.
Police say the man was pulling a lawnmower backwards up a hill when his son, Brody, walked up behind him.
The lawnmower ran over the toddler's right foot, severing all of his toes.
"I really truthfully don't know how it happened," said neighbor Bernard Bauer. "It must have happened real fast. Because, a few minutes before that, I'd seen the kids running across the yard. So, I guess accidents happen that fast."
Brody was taken to Memorial Hospital before being flown to Indy, where he's being treated at Riley Hospital for Children.
His great grandmother says despite the accident, the toddler is in good spirits.
There's a possibility one of his toes could be reattached.
While Brody is OK, Justin Kinzie knows all too well how severe the accident could have been.
In June 2010, his son, Mason, nearly died when he was run over by a riding mower.
"The injuries that he sustained are the kinds of things you would see after an IED in Afghanistan or Iraq," Kinzie said. "Just horrible, maiming injuries."
Kinzie says in order to prevent accidents like Saturday's, people need to change their attitudes about lawnmower safety.
"You always hear stories, 'I give them rides, but I make sure the blades are off'," he said. "But, what you are doing is you're teaching the kid that the lawnmower is a toy."
