Teen drowns in famous Bloomington quarry

Police in Bloomington say a teenager drowned in a quarry after leaping 65 feet from a ledge made famous in the movie "Breaking Away."

Friends of 18-year-old Walter Ayala of Washington, Indiana filmed his jump and continued shooting until they jumped in to try to save him after he failed to resurface. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Saturday.

Monroe County chief deputy coroner Nicole Meyer says an autopsy yesterday showed the death was "consistent with drowning."

The quarry was featured in the 1979 award-winning movie "Breaking Away" about the annual I.U. Little 500 bicycle race.
