Police say a southern Indiana teenager who traveled to Bloomington to watch friends compete in a track meet later died after jumping into a quarry.

Eighteen-year-old Walter Ayala of Washington died Saturday after he jumped into Rooftop Quarry in Bloomington and failed to resurface.

Police and a dive team pulled his body from the water 40 minutes after receiving a 911 call.

An autopsy will be performed to determine how Ayala died.

Police say Ayala and two friends had come to Bloomington to watch a state track meet on the Indiana University campus. Afterward, the trio visited the quarry.

The area's water-filled quarries are inviting in hot weather, but they're filled with unknown debris that can be dangerous. Over the years, numerous people have drowned in their waters.
