Indiana kicks off online beach closure alert system

The state has started an online system to let Lake Michigan visitors know whether beaches are open or closed.

The new "BeachGuard" feature on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's website is designed to quickly update the swimming conditions along Indiana's 43-mile-long lakeshore in Lake, LaPorte and Porter counties.

Many beaches along Indiana's shoreline, including the popular sandy stretches at Indiana Dunes State Park near Chesterton, are sometimes closed because of bacteria in the water.

As of this afternoon, the BeachGuard system lists conditions at 17 public beaches, with no closures or advisories indicated. It will eventually expand to provide updates on 20 beaches.
