A Muncie man described as the mastermind behind an arson-for-profit spree that led to dozens of fires was sentenced to four years in prison.

Forty-three-year old Kenneth Allen was also ordered to pay more than one million dollars in restitution.

Allen pleaded guilty to conspiracy to using arson to commit mail fraud, a federal charge that carried a maximum 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine. He was sentenced Wednesday in federal court and ordered to pay the restitution to eight insurance companies.

Authorities have said Allen masterminded a criminal operation that involved more than 37 arsons and one million dollars in claims from 2000 to 2006. They say Allen and others would buy low-priced houses either as their own or for others, set them ablaze and then collect insurance.
