A Delaware County voter registration deputy has been charged with battery after police say he was involved in a fight with a newspaper reporter and a candidate.

Witnesses say 56-year-old Will D. Statom pushed a 27-year-old reporter for The Star Press of Muncie and the two fell to the floor. Democratic 6th District congressional candidate Barry A. Welsh says when he tried to intervene, Statom hit him.

The fight followed a contentious election board meeting where some 50 Democratic voters expressed concern that some 1,400 new voter registration applications would not be processed by the registration office by the April 15th deadline.

Statom says he was upset that the newspaper hadn't challenged the legality of the meeting. He believes it violated a state law that requires 48 hours notice for most public meetings.
