Triton, an 11-year-old polar bear, has died at the Indianapolis Zoo. Officials say the bear suffered a severe twisting of the colon, which stopped the blood flow to a large section of his bowel.

Zoo officials say Triton began vomiting on Wednesday, and his condition worsened yesterday morning. The cause of the twisting was not immediately known.

Officials were about to move Triton to the zoo's veterinary hospital for possible exploratory surgery before he collapsed and died.

The zoo has two other polar bears, a 22-year-old female and a 34-year-old female on loan from the Louisville Zoo.
