Police in Fort Wayne are increasing their visibility at area high schools following nine homicides within a week. Authorities believe the deaths are related to gang violence and drugs.
Two men died of gunshot wounds in Fort Wayne over the weekend, bringing the total number of homicides to 12 this year. That compares with 25 murders in all of 2007.
Police spokesman Michael Joyner says police are not stepping up patrols but are increasing their visibility at schools. No arrests have been made in any of the cases, but Joyner says police have some "very strong leads."
The string of slayings began on March 31st when police found two women dead inside a home on the city's northeast side.
