A Merrillville man faces a term of 85 years in prison when he's sentenced May 2 after pleading guilty to the murder of a Gary woman and the attempted murder of her son.

Sharde McKinney, 22, stabbed Nina Moss-Curtis, 45, more than 20 times and slit her throat last Sept. 9 in an attack in her home. Prosecutors say he forced her 13-year-old son to help him clean up the blood and then abducted and stabbed the boy, who survived.

Under the plea agreement accepted Friday by Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray, other felony charges of confinement, two counts of battery and auto theft will be dropped.
