Bill on spinal cord research heading to governor

All vehicle owners would pay fees that go toward spinal cord and traumatic brain injury research under a bill that has cleared the General Assembly.

Currently, the fees are only paid on motorcycle registrations.

The House unanimously voted to accept Senate changes to the bill, which now heads to the governor for consideration.

The bill eliminates a $10 fee enacted last year on motorcycle registrations, which bikers said unfairly targeted them.

This year's legislation would add a fee of 30 cents per vehicle for all registrations on cars, trucks and motorcycles.

The fee is expected to generate about $1.6 million for the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Fund.
