Effort renewed for extending property tax deduction

Indiana Congressman Baron Hill says he's trying to revive legislation that would allow more homeowners to deduct local and state property taxes on their federal income tax returns.

A provision allowing the deduction for homeowners who do not itemize their federal tax returns passed in the House last year, but stalled in the Senate. Hill, a Democrat, says the measure had bipartisan support.

He says it would extend the tax savings to an estimated 30 million homeowners across the country and 940,000 in Indiana. The average tax savings is estimated at $300.

Former Republican Congressman Mike Sodrel, who is challenging Hill in southern Indiana's 9th District, says he backs a complete repeal of property taxes.
