The Indiana Department of Correction has signed a contract to have prison inmates repair transmissions used on postal vehicles.

Inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Facility will repair the transmissions in a contract with Alabama-based Ready-Built Transmission.

Only inmates with more than 3 years left on their sentences and who have shown good conduct will be allowed to do the work.

Prison officials say it will teach them skills they can use after leaving prison.

The transmission plant is replacing the Food Industry Plant at Pendleton, which closed in 2007 after suffering several years of revenue losses.
