Purdue wants more content for its college application

Purdue University's college application is getting longer with the addition of an optional essay that can help school officials get a better picture of prospective students.

Purdue officials say they plan to make changes to both the application form and the criteria used to sort through the thousands of students who apply each year.

Unlike most universities, Purdue does not require information on extracurricular activities or service performed. Purdue, Indiana, Penn State, and Minnesota are the only Big Ten universities that require no essays.

Purdue currently weighs decisions mostly on a student's high school transcript. But school President France Córdova says that doesn't tell enough about potential students.
