The state could revoke the business licenses of companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants under a contentious bill that cleared the House today.
The details of the proposal will likely be hashed out in the final weeks of the legislative session.
The Democrat-controlled House voted 66-33 for its version of the bill, which gained some votes from minority Republicans.
Representative Eric Turner--a Republican from Marion who voted for the bill --says it was lacking because it does not prevent immigrants from receiving public benefits.
He says he thinks lawmakers need to go further.
Bill supporters say cracking down on companies that profit from illegal immigrations is a good way to address the issue.
