16-year-old accused of killing Clay High School senior arraigned

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 16-year-old accused of shooting a popular Clay High School senior was arraigned Wednesday.

Jermaine Munn Jr. is charged with murder and robbery in the death of 18-year-old Nathan Hall.

18-year-old Shane Williams was charged last week in the case. He’s accused of felony murder and robbery.

Police say Williams and Hall communicated via Facebook about getting together for a marijuana deal.

But, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office says it was a setup.

A witness told police he overheard Williams and Munn planning to rob Hall because he had “a lot of marijuana.”

In the early morning hours of April 16, Hall and Williams met up on North Adams Street. Munn was nearby. He eventually approached with a handgun, acting like he was robbing both Hall and Williams.

Charging documents say Munn pointed the gun at Hall’s face as Hall emptied his pockets. Hall said, “Shane, are you going to do me this way?”

Munn responded, “He knows your name?” Police say that’s when he shot Hall in the head at close range.

Munn and Williams got away with $80 cash and a small amount of marijuana.

Munn was arraigned in St. Joseph County court Thursday.

Hall’s father, David Opfer, was there. He released a statement to NewsCenter 16 saying, “On April 16, our son Nathan Hall made some serious mistakes and trusted someone he shouldn’t have. For that, he paid with his life. All we’re asking for now is that these men answer for the crimes they have committed and that justice is served. Also, we want to thank the Metro Homicide Unit for their hard and tireless work. Commander Tim Corbett and his unit took this case from no witnesses to solved in just about two months. We want the people of this city and our city leaders to know what a great job Corbett and his unit have done for us. Thank you.”

Munn will be back in court June 25. Williams will appear June 13.

They're both being held in the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
