Prosecutors and state officials are trying to negotiate a settlement with a Muncie-area hog farmer accused of violating environmental laws.
A Delaware Circuit Court judge has set a conference for December 12th in the criminal and civil case involving 39-year-old Jacobus Tielen of rural Eaton.
Tielen's farm has a history of manure spills that killed fish in a nearby creek. Since 1999, he's has been fined more than $21,000.
Tielen's attorneys proposed a settlement last December, and attorneys have been working on it since then.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management won a temporary restraining order in June 2005 barring Tielen from further swine breeding at his farm, but a judge later lifted the ban.
