Purdue tested a new campus-wide alarm system.

The CampusAlert system would install new sirens that have the ability to issue electronic voice warnings. The voice alerts tell people on campus what the emergency is and what action to take.

It was tested at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Purdue graduate student Joe Dumyahn says the voice might be hard to understand in long messages, but post-doctoral scholar Omolola Adedokun says it could be a useful addition.

University officials are considering purchasing the voice alarms to augment other warning systems.

Earlier this year, Purdue added text messages and e-mails to its emergency notification system.
