A Gary police officer who was hit by a sport utility vehicle fired his gun at the fleeing vehicle, apparently hitting a passenger.
Police say the passenger fled the scene but later turned up at a hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound.
Officer Robert Hemphill shot 22-year-old Jason Stewart yesterday afternoon after the SUV bumped Hemphill and hit his car as it fled a traffic stop near a public housing development. Hemphill wasn't hurt in the incident.
The SUV continued driving away from the traffic stop and hit a fire hydrant and tree, and Stewart and another man ran from the vehicle.
The hospital declined to release Stewart's condition.
