Mercury spill prompts closing of Marion middle school

McCulloch Middle School in Marion is closed while crews clean up mercury that was found on a classroom floor.

School district Superintendent Jeff Hendrix says none of the school's some 550 students or staff members became ill from the spill found Thursday. But because students might have tracked the mercury through the school, officials took some students' shoes and gave them shoes supplied by a discount store.

Students were sent home with a letter for parents saying the shoes would be returned after they are cleaned.

Hendrix says a student brought a small container partially filled with mercury to school last week. The district hopes to have the school reopened on Monday.
