INDIANAPOLIS Authorities say 16 people suspected of being involved in a large drug operation in Indianapolis have been taken into custody and another was fatally shot by police serving a warrant at an Indianapolis apartment complex.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Linda Jackson says the shooting occurred about 6 a.m. Thursday on the city's west side. Jackson says the officers were inside the apartment when a person pointed a gun at them. That person died at the scene.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says the raids targeted a group that allegedly imported thousands of pounds of marijuana from Mexico into the city. He says more than 15,000 pounds of marijuana and $5 million in suspected drug money have been seized the past two years. Hogsett says the drug money was sent back to Mexico.
