Very low rate of positive TB tests in Kokomo

Health officials say a very low percentage of people taking tuberculosis tests in Howard County have tested positive for the infectious disease.

Seven of 536 people receiving the tests recently came back positive for TB.

That's a rate of just over 1 percent.

Howard County Health Department public health nursing coordinator Kathy Oldaker says normally 5 percent to 10 percent of tests come back positive.

She says a positive test could be the result of a prior exposure.

She says those testing positive must get a chest X-ray within the next month to determine if the TB in them is active or dormant.

A Kokomo nail salon employee tested positive for TB on February, 22, prompting concerns of broad exposure to TB.
