The American Cancer Society is issuing a plea for more volunteers to help drive patients to treatment.
The society had 3,720 requests for rides in Indiana during its 2010 fiscal year. The number of requests this year is already 4,077.
But the cancer society's Road to Recovery program has seen the number of volunteer drivers drop from 316 last year to 286 this year.
Terri Jones of the society's Columbus office says some patients are too ill to drive themselves or are under doctor's orders not to drive. She says a lack of transportation can be a big barrier to treatment.
About 34,000 Hoosiers will be told they have cancer this year.
