Elkhart man sheds nearly 50 pounds in one month

He didn't make it on to the Biggest Loser, but an Elkhart man is still winning his weight loss battle.

Rick Kurtz interviewed for the NBC show earlier this year; when he was selected as a contestant, he decided to shed the weight at home.

With the help of CrossFit Michiana, he's started a new, healthier lifestyle.

At the beginning of October, Kurtz tipped the scale at more than 450 pounds. It was a large load to carry both physically and mentally.

"I can remember watching TV and seeing the reflection of myself," said Kurtz. "That was a hard spot."

Since then, Rick has been working out three times a week, for about an hour each session. He participates in the same classes as everyone else, sometimes doing modified exercises.

All of that dedication has paid off. Since starting the workouts on Oct. 31, Kurtz has lost at least 49 pounds.

"We just threw him into class," said CrossFit Michiana Owner Jim Turnbo. "He came in bright and early. That was the first test. When you come in three days a week at 5:15, then i know you're at least going to be somewhat serious."

Kurtz has also gotten serious about his eating habits, focusing on balancing protein, fat and carbohydrates in every meal. He's had to exercise lots of willpower -- Kurtz drives past McDonald's at least twice a day.

But he's determined to keep shedding the weight, although he doesn't have a specific goal weight he wants to reach.

"I just want to go for a run if I want," he said.

He'll step on the scale again on Jan. 2. CrossFit Michiana is donating its services to Kurtz.
