Sunburns are painful and may lead to cancer, however, there is a new ally in the never-ending battle against the sun that could be growing in your backyard.
Protection may come from of all things, including black raspberries.
Black raspberry extract is loaded with anti-oxidants. Moreover, when it is rubbed on the skin it may stop the skin from swelling from sunburn. The extract even stopped tumors from forming in mice.
"Things that you wouldn't normally expect, like raspberries and skin cancer, who would have ever thought? But it really opens people's minds to alternatives," said Jason Duncan of the Ohio State University.
New research also shows men should be particularly careful in the sun.
"Men actually seem to be more sensitive to sunlight, but in a different way than women," said Tatiana Oberyszyn,PH.D of Ohio State University.
Research in male mice revealed they have much lower cancer preventing anti-oxidants in their skin.
"The male mice actually developed tumors about two weeks earlier. They developed more tumors over time. The tumors were larger and also more advanced," Oberyszyn added.
Researchers believe this study will translate from mice to men.
As for other fruits? Ohio State University researchers believe any berry will do the trick.
The extract is also colorless, which means it will not leave blue residue after it has been rubbed on the skin.
