Limitations of new HPV vaccine

The new HPV vaccine has been proven to prevent the sexually transmitted disease in young women, however, new research shows it does not work for those who are already infected.

Researchers tested the vaccine on women in Costa Rica who had HPV.

They thought the vaccine might help the immune system clear the virus quickly, however, they found that women given the vaccine had the same rate of viral clearance as women not given the vaccine.

Right now the vaccine is recommended for young girls ages 11 to 12.
