A young Mattawan firefighter died Tuesday night in the line of duty. Nate Fruin suffered a heart attack while responding to a house fire on M43.
The 22-year-old, who had no cardiac history, was riding in a support vehicle when he started complaining of chest pains. He went into full cardiac arrest and later died at a Kalamazoo hospital.
Fruin and another firefighter were taking water and refreshments to other firefighters battling a blaze when he fell ill.
