Work Zone Awareness Week continues to educate with new PSA video

It's a week dedicated to educating people about the dangers on highways and roads.

It’s the perfect time to have "Work Zone Awareness Week" because it’s getting warmer out and more construction is starting.

INDOT says this week marks the ceremonial start to highway construction season.

While it's been going on for years, it's the first time the Indiana Department of Transportation, or INDOT, debuted its new public service announcement.

The theme of INDOTS new PSA is, "No One Drives Through Your Office at 70 mph".

It’s a video that shows the dangers of speeding through a work zone. While the PSA is fun and light hearted, the dangers are very serious.

According to INDOT, eight people were killed in Indiana work zones just last year.

“We had a gentleman also, last summer, was killed while doing a flagging operation. He had a car stopped, another car came up behind him and couldn’t stop so he drove off onto the shoulder where our flagger was and hit our flagger and killed him,” says INDOT Operations Manager, Jim Scheffer.

Just because you aren’t the one working doesn’t mean you aren’t in danger.

“4 out of every 5 injuries or fatalities in a work zone is the driver or their passenger, not an actual worker on the road,” says INDOT Media Relations Director, Matt Deitchley.

While many of us will never experience firsthand what it feels like to be inches away from a car as it passes at 70 mph, here’s an idea.

“Have you ever had a close call while you were walking across the street and you had to jump back or maybe you are riding a bike and a car came by a little to close and that was a nerve wrecking situation? That’s something that maybe happens to folk’s maybe once a year, think about doing that every single day 9 to 5,” Deitchley continues.

“We realize that sometimes our work zones are an inconvenience for people but we are just trying to do what we do,” adds Scheffer, “The exact time that it takes you to get through that work zone, by slowing down, could save somebody’s life.”

It kind of makes you think, that work zone you sped through could have been someone’s life or even your own.

Work Zone Awareness Week started the 15th and will run until the 19th.
