An Elkhart mill worker was flown to an Indianapolis trauma center after being injured while cutting wood Friday morning.
Around 7:30 a.m., a wooden plank was accidentally driven through Tom Woods' head at Homan Lumber in the 1600 block of West Lusher Avenue in Elkhart.
Another worker, who was with Woods at the time, says he was responsive and aware of what was going on before medics arrived.
Snowfall and a low cloud ceiling prevented a helicopter from being able to fly in to take the victim a hospital.
An ambulance took the worker to Memorial Hospital instead, where he was then transferred to an Indianapolis trauma center.
A family friend told NewsCenter 16 Woods that after having surgery Friday evening to remove the wood from his face and skull, he is currently in stable condition.
