Women pleads guilty in connection with deadly accident in April

A guilty plea was entered Monday in connection with an accident that killed a South Bend woman and her dog as they slept. Monday Erica McCaffery, 23, pleaded guilty in connection to the death of Barb Knapp, 56.

Police say McCaffery was speeding west on Corby Boulevard and tried to turn onto Twyckenham. She also had been drinking.

Knapp was sleeping in her Twyckenham Drive home early in the morning on April 20 when McCaffery's car plowed into it. Knapp, who was asleep on the couch was killed immediately.

The crash was so powerful a fire hydrant was pushed into the home which was demolished later that week.

Mccaffery will be sentenced October 22. She could get anywhere from 6 to 20 years in prison.
