Woman hospitalized, man injured after 3 men pose as utility workers to enter home

A .St. Joseph County couple is injured, but alive Thursday after three armed men allegedly entered their home posing as utility workers and shot their dog.

The male victim, Scott Weaver, said the men knocked on the door of their home in the 53000 block of Hickory Rd. just after 11 a.m. The men claimed that there was a gas leak in the neighborhood and they needed to enter the house to perform repairs. Weaver said that the men were wearing orange safety vests.

After inspecting the furnace, the suspects revealed the guns. Weaver said he tried to fight them off and sustained bruises and scrapes. Weaver refused medical treatment at the scene.

"I struggled with him and fought with him, another guy came from behind, hit me in the back of the head, knocked me out," said Weaver. "They tied me up and kept asking where the money was. They just wanted money and guns."

His wife also tried to fight the intruders and was later taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Their dog, a pit bull puppy, was shot.

St. Joseph County Police have confirmed that the men were not utility workers.

After the first police officer arrived on the scene and was interviewing Weaver, a white SUV drove by that Weaver said was similar to the suspects. Police pulled the SUV over, but the suspects were not inside.

A TV was missing from the home, and possibly some guns, according to police.

The home sits just across the street from a medical plaza. Police are working with the plaza to obtain surveillance video, put say that it is hard to determine exactly who the suspects are.

Police do know that they are looking for three African-American males of tall and strong builds, driving a white SUV, possibly a newer model Chevy Suburban with tinted windows.

Sgt. Bill Redman of the St. Joseph Co. Police would like to emphasize that residents should always check for the proper ID of anyone trying to enter their home for utility repairs.
