A Walkerton man serving in Afghanistan was spared Tuesday in an attack that killed two other Hoosiers in his engineering unit.

Specialists' Sergio Perez of Crown Point and Nicholas Taylor of Berne were killed during routine patrol in Kandahar Province, which included both rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire.

Corporal Tyler Bowers, who graduated from John Glenn High School, survived the attack with minor injuries. He is serving with the 713th engineering company, out of Valparaiso.

Walkerton Patrolman Jim Christie says Bowers mother told him her son had some shrapnel wounds but would return to duty next week.

He and an interpreter were said to be riding in the front seat of the vehicle that was hit and his comrades who died were in the back seat.
