A Van Buren County Deputy is being honored for saving the life of a fellow officer. Deputy Brian Matthews was flying back to Michigan last week after spending time in Arizona for training.
During the flight, a fellow Michigan Police Officer underwent a medical emergency. The crew looked for a doctor on board, but got no response.
Deputy Matthews responded that he was once a trained EMT, and told the crew they needed to land immediately.
The plane landed in Des Moines, Iowa, and the officer was taken to the hospital
Doctors said if Deputy Matthews wouldn't have gotten medication to the officer; there could have been severe consequences.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office awarded Deputy Matthews with a Life Saving Award last Thursday.
