UPDATE: Fire breaks out at recent South Bend murder scene

The same South Bend building that was the scene of a murder on Saturday night was set on fire early this morning.

Investigators list the cause of the fire as “incendiary.”

“Just different types of devices that are used to start the fire,” said Capt. Gerard Ellis of the South Bend Fire Department. “Could be something as simple as a lighted cigarette butt or an incendiary Molotov cocktail.”

Investigators believe an accelerant was used and samples have been sent to the laboratory for analysis.

The building in question is at 229 N. Olive Street. The downstairs houses a business called Percy’s Heating and Cooling Repair: The upstairs houses Percy’s residence.

At about 11:30 Saturday night police were called to find a 55 year old man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim has been identified as Michael Gillam of South Bend.

55 year old Michael Taylor of South Bend was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder.

Police have yet to identify a possible motive for the shooting death. The filing of formal charges is expected on Tuesday and should provide more information.
