Two people were taken to the hospital after a crash Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at around 11:45 a.m. on State Road 331, near Layton Rd. just south of the bypass. Investigators say a northbound pickup truck drifted over the center line and struck a southbound semi, hitting the semi's trailer side.

A witness that was following up the pickup said they noticed no problems with the truck, but saw it slowly drift over the center line.

The two people inside the pickup were trapped in the cab were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The driver, Larry Evans, 36, of Hitchins, Kentucky, was listed in serious condition after sustaining serious head and leg injuries. Evans’ passenger, Allen Gifford, 46, also from Kentucky, suffered head and arm injuries but was in stable condition.

The driver of the semi, James Frost, 50, of Niles, was not injured in the crash but was taken to Memorial Hospital for a blood test as part of standard procedure.

Investigators are examining the scene further; they say alcohol and drugs do not seem to be factors at this point in time.
