Three local communities have now cancelled upcoming fireworks celebrations because of the extremely dry weather.
First Friday’s fireworks at Plymouth Speedway are now off, after the fire department asked the track to cancel to keep area homes safe from a fire risk.
Celebrate America’s Patriotic Program and Fireworks are cancelled for Sunday at Black Squirrel golf course in Goshen. Organizers were also concerned people attending could get sick from the heat.
Finally, Elkhart has cancelled its July 4th fireworks at Rice Field because of fears that it could put surrounding neighborhoods in danger.
"A little shower isn't going to get us out of this situation,” said Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore. “So we need some pretty heavy-significant rains, that doesn't seem to be on the near horizon, at least not by the fourth of July. So I think we made the right decision, and I hope the general public will understand."
Mayor Moore hopes conditions Improve, so Elkhart can have a fireworks show later this summer.
In the meantime, the city will still have a patriotic concert in the bandshell at McNaughton park at 7 p.m. on July 4.
