Four people were injured in a six car pile-up accident caused by icy road conditions along I-65, near the Merrillville exit.

Around 4:18 a.m. Saturday, Indiana State Police say Peter Tychek, 31, of Rensselaer, lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. The compact car spun into the median along the busy highway. Tychek was assessing damage when Marco Valdez, 19, of Lawrenceville Georgia, lost control of his black 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. The large pickup truck hit Tychek’s car and then hit him, hurdling the 31-year-old over the median wall.

Tychek was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart with pain in his neck and back. Two of Valdez’s passengers, also from Lawrenceville, Maria Arreola, 37, and Juan Najera, 38, were transported to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with back and neck pain.

None of the injuries appear to be life threatening and troopers say everyone was wearing their seat belt.

Four other vehicles also lost control and were damaged at this location. There were no injuries from those crashes. Two of the vehicles drove away with minimal damage and the other two were heavily damaged.

“Drivers have to learn to slow down when the weather deteriorates the road conditions,” Trooper Gary Runde said. “If you are involved in a crash on a busy highway, the safest place to be is in your car.”

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic control and secondary crash reports.
