Three Oaks veteran killed in El Salvador

A small Michigan community is mourning the loss of a lifelong resident who was killed in El Salvador over the weekend.

Salvadoran police say 55-year-old Michael Brown was shot at least five times in the head and shoulders Saturday night.

According to police, Brown was driving a rental car near a coffee farm in Izalco when the shooting happened.

He had a female passenger with him who was injured and is now under police protection.

A family friend says Brown knew the woman, but wouldn't elaborate on their relationship.

He says Brown was in the country on personal business.

The Three Oaks resident has lived in the small town his entire life.

According to the American Legion Post 204 Commander Jack Meyers, Brown served in the military for 30 years.

He was a Master Sergeant with the Airborne Special Services.

At the Legion Monday night, the absence of Brown -- known by many as "Brownie" -- was evident.

Signs throughout the post read "We'll miss you Brownie."

"He was just a super person and got along with everyone," Meyers said. "Anyone who needed anything, Mike would be there to help him out. "

Brown didn't only spend years serving his country, he also spent much of his time serving his local community.

He was active in the Legion Post and Lions Club.

"He used to do all of our Flag Day parades when he was in town," Meyers said. "He was usually our cadence officer."

Now the close-knit community is trying to comprehend the shocking loss of Brown, who everyone described as a nice guy.

His family is in the process of trying to bring his body back to the United States.

They're also searching for more answers about what happened the night Brown died.

In January, the U.S. State Department warned citizens against visiting El Salvador because of frequent violence.
