UPDATE: Mishawaka teen driver dies in rollover crash

St. Joseph County A Mishawaka teenager was killed in a rollover crash early Monday morning in St. Joseph Co.

It happened on Capital Avenue between Jefferson and Lincoln Way around 12:45 a.m. Anthony Ryor, 17, was driving when he lost control of the vehicle just north of the Capital Ave. Bridge.

Two other teens in the car, ages 17 and 18, told officers they were coming home from a movie when the driver lost control.

Lt. Matt Blank of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Dept. said Ryor may have been speeding, but was not necessarily "driving recklessly."

"Statements from the two teens in the vehicle that survived said that they thought they were going faster than the speed limit but they didn't couldn't say for sure how fast," Lt. Blank said.

Police believe all three passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

"The dynamics of the crash were such that the driver was still ejected, even though he was wearing a seat belt," Blank said.

Ryor sustained massive internal injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead later Monday morning.

A toxicology test was ordered but police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Ryor was a senior at Mishawaka High School, a member of the baseball team and an honor roll student, according to his principal, Jerome Calderone.

"He was a young man who had a very promising future and was living his life the right way, doing things the right way," Calderone told NewsCenter16. "It's just very unfortunate."

As students return to class Tuesday, the school's crisis committee is prepared to support any students in the wake of this tragedy.

"Our guidance counselors will be available, our social worker will be available, other social workers and counselors from other schools within School City will be here and we'll be prepared to assist any student," Calderone said.
