Take Charge Thursday: Heating Assistance

Winter is just around the corner and with that comes a higher heating bill that many out there cannot afford.

But, there is help out there for those who meet certain income requirements. Agencies like Real Services can guide you through the application process for the energy assistance program.

The average household is expected pay about $437 for their winter heating bill, according to NIPSCO. Real Services provides a benefit of around $280 to the individuals who qualify. In order to be approved for the assistance, you must be at or below the 150% poverty guideline.

Other programs aim to give people the tools necessary to become self-sufficient, while still providing financial assistance.

"Team Heat" requires that participants pay $50 per month and they match another $50. Those that take part must also meet with case workers and attend financial literacy classes. This program requires that applicants be at or below the 250% poverty guideline.
