Thousands of kids around Indiana will be eating big healthy breakfasts this week, powering their brains for the next portion of ISTEP tests, set to begin Monday.

Students grades 3 through 8 are tested in four main areas, all of which saw improvement last year. 79 percent of students passed the English test in 2012, compared to 78 percent in 2011. The math, science, and social studies pass rates were all up 2 percent in 2012, to 81 percent, 71 percent, and 69 percent, respectively.

Kent Kolbow from the Sylvan Learning Center shares some helpful advice for students, to help continue the trend of rising test scores.

  • Avoid multiple choice options with absolute words, like “always” or “never”

  • Use the process of elimination. Focusing on what the answer isn’t can help students figure out what it is.

He says cramming for the test the night before is unlikely to lead to much improvement because ISTEP tests learning absorbed over time. Instead of staying up late studying, Kolbow recommends:

  • Eat a healthy breakfast that’s high in protein

  • Get plenty of rest

  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water

Kolbow says it’s important to avoid feeling stressed, and to allow for plenty of time in the morning so as to begin in a relaxed mindset, not rushed. Those ideas apply throughout the testing day. He says to:

  • Relax and take deep breaths

  • Set a comfortable pace

  • Read the question completely

  • Double check answers

ISTEP testing continues through Friday.
