Father and kids root for Notre Dame, mom roots for Alabama

You could call Andrew Troyer a little superstitious.

He's worn the exact same outfit to watch every single Notre Dame game this season.

So, it's no surprise he took the August birth of Andrew, Jr. as a sign.

"I was born in 1988, before the start of the season, last time they went undefeated and won the national title," he said. "24 years later, my son was born in August. And, in August I kind of had a feeling. I told everyone they were going to win it this year."

And, what a year it's been for fans like Andrew and Andrew Jr. to watch the Irish.

They started the season unranked and are ending it undefeated -- after many close calls.

"End of the USC game, I actually cried a little bit," Andrew said. "I actually got to wake up knowing Notre Dame was going to be number one and going for the BCS title."

It's a dream come true for the lifelong St. Joseph County resident, who grew up on Notre Dame football.

"You either love them or hate them," he said. "Luckily, I was raised the right way."

But, in Andrew's eyes, his wife might not have been -- she's also a lifelong St. Joseph County resident, but a dedicated Alabama fan.

"Now that it's here, I am rooting for Alabam," Suzanne Troyer said. "But, at the same point, the rest of the family is rooting for Notre Dame. So, it's a little hard."

Despite rooting for 'Bama, Suzanne will be wearing Notre Dame gear Monday to support her husband.

She says there can be tense moments when you're rooting for opposite teams, but the family still has a good time.

"It's fun to have everyone together and have that common bond," she said.

And, while the couple can't agree on who will come out on top Monday night, they say their love of different teams doesn't drive them apart.

"At the end of the day though, win or lose, we'll still have Tuesday morning together," Andrew said.
