Patriotic tunes filled the air at the Morris Performing Arts Center Thursday morning.

Area students were treated to the musical stylings of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. In a special American-themed concert entitled Let Freedom Ring."

After the color guard presented the flag, the orchestra performed music by some of the nation's finest composers, including Aaron Copeland and John Williams.

The emcee of the event was WNDU alum Gordy Young.

Organizers say the patriotic theme was an opportunity for students to learn more about their heritage, outside of a traditional classroom setting, as well as possibly discover the next Beethoven or Mozart in the process.

“We hope that it will also inspire a lot of young people to take up music and pursue studying music and the pursuit of excellence,” said Ed Phillips, Director Of Education, South Bend Symphony Orchestra.

More than 35 area schools are taking part in this year's event.

The orchestra will perform a second concert for students on Friday morning.
