While many people were enjoying their Thanksgiving dinners, thousands lined up to get a head start on holiday shopping.

This year, some stores decided to offer big sales before Black Friday, instead opening Thanksgiving night.

“It's a significant change, but based on what our customers have told us, I think it's a good change,” said Mishawaka Best Buy Supervisor Jeff Crowder.

Best Buy opened its doors at 6 p.m. – its earliest ever on Thanksgiving. The change meant a shorter line of customers than when the store opened at midnight last year, but some still camped out to ensure the best deals.

“We had our little tent setup right here and we slept until like 3 am.,” said South Bend resident Joel Rangel. “But, we had to get out of the tent and get in our car to warm up because it was just really cold.”

Super Target in Mishawaka opened a couple hours later at 8 p.m. The line there didn’t start to get long until around 6:45 p.m.

“I’m really surprised,” said Kurt Richardson, who staked out the first spot in line Wednesday night. “I thought there would be a line by the time we got here but there wasn't.”

By the time doors opened, that change. The line stretched around the side of the building and spilled into the parking lot.

While it meant waiting in the cold for many, they say the deals and the bonding time makes it worth the standing in the cold.

“I have my 18-year-old son in line behind me waiting to get things for his little sisters,” said Pat McNamara, who was shopping for his five kids and grandchildren. “That’s what matters is family.”

Several stores will wait until Friday morning to open and offer sales:

Lowe's and Home Depot open at 5 a.m.
Burlington Coat Factory is open at 6 a.m.
Bed Bath and Beyond is open at 6 a.m.
Menards is open at 6 a.m.
TJ Maxx and Marshalls are open at 7 a.m.
Sam's Club is open at 7 a.m.
Radio Shack is open at 8 a.m..
