Thursday is Opening Day for the South Bend Silver Hawks, and staff anxiously prepared for what was expected to be big crowds at Coveleski Stadium.
Fans can expect big changes this year, thanks to owner, Andrew Berlin. New menus, apparel and a tikki bar will all be available to the crowds, plus a new sound system and scoreboard. And a sight unknwon to most fans, an all-pink visitors' locker room, fondly known as the "Pink Palace," featuring pink walls, couches and bathroom fixtures.
It is season 2 for Berlin, who says these changes are all for the fans, giving South Bend and the surrounding communities, something to be proud of.
"This is a place to create memories. It's not just with family, it's also with friends or loved ones or couples who want to come out on date night. This is a gathering place for the entire region," said Berlin. "It's not just a South Bend facility, it's for the Michiana region. There are 750,000 people who live within a 45 minute drive, radius around our home plate. In terms of coming together as a community, to have a lot of fun, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any other attraction or any other venue that competes with something like we have here."
The game starts at 7:05 p.m. For more information, visit the Silver Hawks website.
