ST. JOSEPH Panhandlers are now allowed on the streets of St. Joseph, Mich.
The city is no longer enforcing a city ordinance which prohibits begging in public areas. That's because it's very similar to a Michigan state law which was recently ruled unconstitutional.
St. Joseph's city attorney tells The Herald Palladium that the ordinance will probably be repealed, but first they have to consider how it affects public safety.
Dozens of other Michigan communities, including Watervliet and Buchanan, have similar panhandling bans, which likely would not stand up to a challenge in court.
